If you’re pregnant in Atlanta, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make before your baby arrives is where you want to deliver.

When you’re researching Northside vs. Piedmont Atlanta, you’ll quickly find that both hospitals are among the most familiar names in Atlanta maternity care.

I delivered at Piedmont Atlanta, and my OB was with Piedmont OBGYN.

Having an established relationship with my OB was an important part of the experience. When you’re pregnant, especially toward the end of pregnancy, there’s something reassuring about already knowing your doctor, the practice, and where you’ll be delivering.

The labor and delivery rooms are huge

One of the things I remember most about Piedmont is how large the labor and delivery rooms were.

They felt more like suites than what I expected a hospital delivery room to feel like. There was plenty of room to move around, and the space felt comfortable for both me and my husband.

If you’re touring hospitals and room size matters to you, this is something I would specifically ask to see.

The postpartum rooms are much smaller

The biggest contrast for me was moving from labor and delivery to postpartum recovery.

The postpartum rooms at Piedmont felt considerably smaller.

That doesn’t mean they were bad. By that point, I was focused on recovering, spending time with my baby, and figuring out what came next. But the difference between the spacious delivery room and the smaller postpartum room was noticeable.

And realistically, you’re probably not choosing a hospital based entirely on the size of your postpartum room.

If everything goes smoothly, you’re there for a relatively short period of time. Still, it’s something worth knowing when you take a maternity tour.

I Actually Loved Having the Nursery

Another part of my Piedmont experience that I appreciated was the nursery.

With my first baby, I remember wanting him close. I was a new mom, and the idea of sending my baby anywhere felt strange. I wanted to see him, hold him, and know that he was right there.

My experience with twins was completely different.

After having twins, I was exhausted. I was recovering from birth while trying to take care of two newborns, and suddenly having the option to send the babies to the nursery felt less like something I didn’t want and more like a very welcome opportunity to rest.

It was one of those things that made me realize that what you want from a hospital can change depending on your birth experience.

The first-time mom version of me wanted her baby beside her.

The twin mom version of me was very happy to let someone else hold those babies for a while.

And the Food?

The food was… hospital food.

I’m not sure anyone chooses a maternity hospital because of the menu.

It wasn’t memorable, but honestly, it wasn’t something that would influence my decision about where to deliver.

When you’re comparing hospitals, I’d put things like your OB, maternal and newborn care, location, rooming-in policies, lactation support, and what happens if you or your baby need additional care much higher on the list.

What I’ve Seen at Northside Hospital Atlanta

I haven’t personally delivered at Northside, so I don’t want to pretend I have the same firsthand experience there.

I have, however, photographed multiple Fresh 48 sessions at Northside Hospital Atlanta.

That gives me a different perspective.

I’m seeing the hospital as a photographer who spends time in postpartum rooms with brand-new parents rather than as a patient.

One of the things I’ve noticed immediately is that the rooms I’ve photographed in at Northside tend to feel open and spacious.

Northside Atlanta’s Women’s Center has private labor-delivery-recovery rooms as well as private postpartum rooms. The maternity center also includes a full-service nursery, lactation services, and specialized care for babies who need additional support.

From my own experience photographing there, the rooms have also felt bright and relatively open, which can make a difference when you’re spending those first days with your baby and having family or your photographer in the room.

Northside Has Extensive Maternity Resources

Northside is a major maternity center in Atlanta, and its services extend well beyond routine deliveries.

The Atlanta Women’s Center offers maternity care, maternal-fetal medicine, a Level III NICU/special-care nursery, lactation support, childbirth education, and care for high-risk pregnancies. Northside Atlanta also has a dedicated high-risk perinatal unit that cares for high-risk and multiple pregnancies.

For someone with a complicated pregnancy or someone expecting multiples, that level of specialized care may be an especially important factor when comparing hospitals.

Northside also emphasizes rooming-in, skin-to-skin contact, and breastfeeding support, with lactation consultants available to new mothers.

It’s tempting to compare hospitals based on room size, food, parking, or whether you like the look of the rooms.

Those things matter.

But I would consider the bigger picture first.

1. Where does your OB deliver?

This may be the most important question.

If you’ve already found an OB you love, start there.

Your relationship with your doctor can be more important than whether one hospital has a slightly larger postpartum room.

I delivered at Piedmont because my OB was with Piedmont OBGYN, and having that established relationship mattered to me.

2. What level of care do you or your baby potentially need?

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, are expecting multiples, or have another medical consideration, look closely at the maternal-fetal medicine and newborn resources available at each hospital.

Northside Atlanta, for example, has extensive high-risk maternal and newborn services.

This is something to discuss with your OB rather than simply deciding based on online reviews.

3. Do you want the option of a nursery?

Ask what the hospital’s current policies are around rooming-in and nursery care.

Some parents want their baby with them almost constantly. Others appreciate having the option to send the baby to the nursery so they can sleep and recover.

And, as I learned myself, you may feel differently about this after your baby is actually here.

4. What kind of postpartum room do you want?

If having a comfortable, spacious room matters to you, take a tour.

Don’t just look at photos online.

The difference between a hospital’s labor and delivery rooms and postpartum recovery rooms can be significant. My experience at Piedmont was a perfect example: the delivery room was enormous, while the postpartum room was much smaller.

5. What support is available after delivery?

Ask about lactation consultants, newborn care education, breastfeeding support, and what happens if your baby needs additional monitoring.

Northside has lactation support and maternity education available to families.

Piedmont also offers maternity education, including childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care, and infant CPR classes.

So, Is Northside or Piedmont Better?

When it comes to Northside vs. Piedmont Atlanta, I don’t think there is one right answer.

Piedmont was a great experience for me. I loved my OB, loved the large delivery rooms, and appreciated having the nursery available when I needed it.

Northside has also made a very good impression on me from the many Fresh 48 sessions I’ve photographed there.The maternity rooms I’ve seen have felt open and spacious, and Northside has an extensive maternity program with significant resources for high-risk pregnancies and newborn care.

Your priorities may be completely different from mine. Your OB may be the deciding factor, or you may be looking for a specific level of NICU care. Proximity to home, private rooms, nursery options, lactation support, and the hospital’s approach to rooming-in may also influence your decision.

Or you might simply walk into a hospital during a tour and think, This feels right.

That’s a perfectly valid way to choose, too.

Don’t Forget: You’ll Probably Be There for a Short Time

When I think back on my own hospital experience, I sometimes wonder how much the room itself really mattered.

Yes, I noticed the difference between the huge Piedmont delivery room and the smaller postpartum room.

But ultimately, I was there to have my baby. The room wasn’t what stayed with me. I remember meeting my baby, the exhaustion, the people who took care of us, and those first quiet hours and days when everything changed.

So if you’re currently comparing Northside vs. Piedmont for having a baby in Atlanta, take the tours, ask the questions, talk to your OB, and think about what matters most to you.
